Global Thermonuclear Tiddlywinks

< Back to mafftopia.com

GTT is a World Domination strategy game played with plastic tiddlywink pieces (“Winks”) and nuclear weapons. Launch your military campaign on a Flat Earth or Globe Earth map.

Scroll down for details of how to play – it’s pretty intuitive though.

You can zoom into the map – pinch-zoom, or use the scroll wheel (or +/- keys).

GTT was created while recording an agentic vibe coding video, with Claude Code and Fable 5. Go check it out on YouTube – you’ll find some gameplay details not mentioned on this page, too.

How to Play

Recommended: Just start playing!!

But here’s the details for those who like to read the TV manual 🙂

Minimum 2 players, maximum 6.

There’s no network play, so you can’t (easily) play your aunt on a different continent. But you can have a bunch of people crowded around your laptop or iPad.

Or choose some computer-controlled players: select their playing style (how aggressive) and their skill level (how clumsy or precise they are at flicking Winks). You can rename players if you want to.

Each turn you get to flick (move) one piece. Click and drag in the opposite direction you want it to move, Angry Birds style. Drag further to get more distance, but it maxxes out.

(You’ll quickly get the hang of it).

Combat

Attack an enemy Wink by flicking your own Wink at it (hopefully that’s obvious). A complex maths thing goes on, taking into account the Winks’ respective strengths, home advantage, and a smidge of randomness.

Both Winks will take damage, but one will always be destroyed.

You can also knock enemy Winks into the sea, in which case they’re instantly lost. You may still take a bit of damage, but not as much as a fight to the death.

Hitting an enemy Wink harder doesn’t do more damage (a nudge is as good as a wink, as they don’t really say). But doing so might be tactical (knocking them into the sea being one example of that).

Winning new territories

Control of a territory is “sticky” – that is, you can win a territory and then wander off, leaving it undefended. There’s strategy to it, like clustering Winks deeper in the map to defend “bottleneck” territories, guard the Western Front, that sort of thing.

Gain neutral territories by flicking a Wink into them. Doesn’t cost you a penny!

Flick a Wink into an undefended but enemy-controlled territory, and it’s yours. But your Wink loses 1 strength.

Flick a Wink into an enemy-controlled territory that has at least 1 enemy in it, and nothing in particular happens. The enemy might react though.

But if your Wink hits theirs, combat takes place.

If you win, and there are no more enemy Winks there (of the player controlling the territory) and you win the territory.

Territory rewards – regeneration

It pays to control territories – the more you have, the better you’ll do. In fact it’s kind of essential.

In short: the more land you own, the quicker your battle-damaged Winks will regain strength (up to 3), and the quicker you’ll eventually be rewarded with new Winks.

In more detail: Approximately every round (more or less), territory rewards are allocated to each player as follows:

  • Player must be in control of at least 3 territories
  • For each territory they control, they get “balanced maths number” amount of regeneration points.
  • The regeneration points are allocated randomly to any Winks of theirs that have < 3 strength
  • Any points left over are allocated to at most 1 new Wink
  • This caps out: As long as the player has more Winks than territories, they’re not awarded new Winks

So go win some territories!!

Prize Territories

Each map usually has at least 1 “prize territory”. Get this territory and CONTROL IT AT ALL COSTS. (You don’t have to leave a Wink there – sticky ownership and all that. But you may want to).

Globe Earth map – it’s the South Pole

Flat Earth map – it’s the Arctic (in the centre)

The player who currently has control of the prize territory gains 1.2x land rewards every turn. (Or every time they’re doled out).

Future maps may have more than one prize territory; some may have none. Depends on the map really.

Combining Pieces – and forging Nukes

If you have 2 Winks in the same territory, drag one onto the other to Combine. A strength 1 and a strength 2 will become, well duh, a strength 3. But 3’s the limit – a 2 and a 3 will just combine into a 3.

BUT if you Combine a 3 with another 3… you’ve just forged a NUKE.

Flick a Nuke into enemy territory and all Winks in the territory are destroyed (including friendlies), and you win the territory. A Nuke always wins, unless it’s knocked into the sea.

What happens if two opposing Nukes hit each other? To be honest I haven’t tested it (only just thought of it) so I’ve no idea.

There are actually loads of other things going on, but it should be discoverable. Have fun!
